Church History
Beginning as a Reformed Church in 1834, we have a long history with our community and her people. In 1894 our present Church was erected and in 1962 our Parsonage was dedicated. St Paul's United Church of Christ has been ever moving forward and our progress has been due to faithful work of our members and the leadership of our ministers.
We will be adding information and photos as we get them.
Here are 4 pictures that are depicted in our Sunday School room of some of the older churches.

Daniel MCConnell Deeds Land to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ
In the year of our Lord, 1798, Daniel McConnell and his wife Mary, were engaged in the final phase of laying out plans for the streets and lots of his town. On a sheepskin parchment, he entered into a legal agreement that deeded lots 40 and 41 to Lorence Bulgar and Daniel Bloom for a German Reformed cemetery.
This transaction required a payment of ten English pounds. On May 26, 1798 the deed to the German Reformed Cemetery was officially signed by Daniel McConnell and Mary McConnell, his wife, and the two Trustees, Bulgar and Bloom. Since this newly planned community was a part of Bedford County, the deed was officially recorded in the Bedford County Courthouse Deed Book AA, page 295, on the date of April 25, 1821.
It was important to Daniel McConnell that his town provided land for Lutheran, Presbyterian and German Reformed churches and cemeteries. He recognized the influential role religion would play in the community.
Over 96 years later in 1894, the German Reformed congregation, that had been worshipping at various locations, broke ground to construct a church building on the front lot of its cemetery land.
Today, and every year hereafter, on a Sunday on or near the May 30th signing date of the deed, the members of St. Paul’s German Reformed Church, now the United Church of Christ, will pause to honor its special connection to the founder of McConnellsburg, Daniel McConnell. We praise God for this significant moment in the history of this congregation as we trace our roots to the birth of this community and to the kind spirit of its founder.
