Gladys Williams
St Paul's VIP in the life of our church family is our spunky Gladys Williams. Despite the weather, the scope of the event, her physical health or discomfort, Gladys is there. We believe her greatest contribution is her steadfast attendance to St Paul's services and events.
She first attended our church as Gladys Yeakel in the late 1950's. Gladys nurtured our children at St Paul's as she taught teenagers in Sunday school and served in the nursery during worship services. She was known as the "cereal lady" because of the Cheerios she provided. At Christmas time, she and her husband Cecil cut down a tree on their farm to grace our sanctuary. Gladys married Cecil Williams, a childhood friend, in 1961.
Gladys only stopped teaching 3 years ago at the age of 82, teaching a total of 64 years. We should not be surprised to know this clear-headed survivor of 85 years graduated form Hancock High school at 14 years of age and from Shippensburg Teachers College at 18 years of age. This made her the youngest graduate in their history at the time.
It has been very fortunate that Gladys and Cecil joined our church. We are only one small part of her life since her 1924 birth. She is a role model for faithful church attendance, for nurturing young people, for caring about the preservation of the family farm and the cats that permanently live there, for keeping in touch with neighbors and past friends and students. She is a true survivor who doesn't let physical afflictions keep her permanently down. When we think she can't do it, she says "Yes I can"!
Gladys Williams passed away Sunday April 22. She will be sorely missed. "Do not let your hearts be troubled, Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also." (John 14: 1-3)
